Architectural Design Project (ARC 3127)
Students are required to further develop the proposed design project by their supervisor that reflect the theme and finalize a programme that addresses the needs of the required user group, as well as provide spaces that invite interaction with the surrounding contextual conditions. In addition to the theme of sustaining humanities, the module focuses on the development of students' ability to integrate considerations of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design, and offers a platform for students to develop their own position in developing their individual project.
Objective of this exercise:-
1. Develop a simple brief for an architectural design project
2. Conduct pre-design analyse to inform the design project
Project 1a - Site Analysis
Semester 6 forms the culmination of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Architecture) programme. This capstone project is based on the theme of architecture with a social impact and the resolution and integration of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design. Progressing from the urban issues of urban street environment , the design studio extends students development of architectural position and design brief in proposing strategy to resolving social issues pertinent within the conditions of the urban landscape (for example, elderly, neglected communities, school, youth centre). Students is to further develop the site and program chosen by their design supervisor that addresses the social needs of a particular urban place and provide interaction and connection of people in the urban space. In doing this, students are required to explore and integrate sustainable strategies of recent times. Subsequently, students produce detailed design of a selected portion of design. The design work is to be supported by a comprehensive design report.
Objective of this module:-
1. To develop awareness in the mediation between socio-cultural needs, the desires of internal spaces and the demands of external constraints pertaining to the broad theme of ‘sustaining humanities’.
2. To develop students’ own position in architectural thinking and design
3. To consolidate an understanding of the holistic nature of the architectural design process, to a given degree of detail, with emphasis on design as an
integrative process, drawing as appropriate on previous subjects of the program.
Throughout this exercise, I able to formulate a simple brief that include appropriate architectural programme and planning within a selected architectural context. Besides, as a group analyzed case studies to gain understanding of archtiectural responses and strategies of an intentional design strategy to inform the design project and also conducted contextual and user analysis in the pre-design phase.
Project 1c - Detail Project
In addition to students ability to develop their own position within the theme of ‘sustaining humanities’—architecture for people, place and time, one key aspect of the design project is to develop holistic and integrated aspects of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design. Subsequent to Phase 2: Design Strategy and Sketch Design phase, students are required to develop environmental strategies and technological resolutions with the main intent to strengthen their design exploration/ideas, and complement their design through a comprehensive design report. This phase is carefully integrated with the Building Technology 2 module.
Objective of this exercise:-
To consolidate an understanding of the holistic nature of the architectural design process, to a given degree of detail, with emphasis on design as an integrative process, drawing as appropriate on previous subjects of the program.
